Harry Potter: Interview with Tom Felton

Tom Felton speaks with the ease of those who have been under the scrutiny of the media for a very long time. But his case is a strange one; he has been in this position since he was twelve. It is amazing that he has not become tired of speaking about Harry Potter after ten years of not only playing Potter’s nemesis, Draco Malfoy, but also being interviewed, quizzed and bothered about it.

”It was always good fun”, he says, when asked if playing such a dark character from such an early age ever posed a challenge, “What twelve year old wouldn’t want to play an evil wizard? I’m pretty sure it’s in every kid out there, I’ve always enjoyed it. I’d rather play a character that was really, really different to me as to someone who is quite close to my character. And Draco is really, really different.”

“It’s weird when you take out the wizard part and in the real world and people call you Draco, I find that bizarre. But it’s cool, I’ve learned to deal with that over the years. If young children boo me, that makes my day. I must’ve done something good if these kids are terrified.”

Felton’s story is a happy one; at 23 he is world famous and can probably take his pick of characters now he is free from the Potter franchise. But the end to Draco’s story in the last movie is different and Felton can’t help but sympathize with his character of ten years.

Tom Felton ‘Grateful’ He Wasn’t Cast As Harry Potter

With the “Harry Potter” film series ending this Friday, it’s hard to imagine actors other than Daniel Radcliffe or Rupert Grint playing the roles of Harry Potter or Ron Weasley.

Tom Felton, best known as Draco Malfoy in the films, says that very easily could have been the case, though. He apparently originally auditioned for the role of Harry and then went on to try out for Ron before finally landing the role of Draco. He admitted to MTV News that he would have been a “very different individual” had he been cast as either of the other two characters originally.

“I’m very grateful I am in the film at all, but even more grateful that I got the character of Draco,” Felton said. “I think Rupert and Dan, there’s no question in my mind, there’s no one else in the world that, A) could have played the character better, but B) could have handled the behind-the-scenes pressure those guys have dealt with over the last decade.”

Felton said there was never any sense of jealousy or rivalry on the set of “Harry Potter” after he, Radcliffe, Grint and the rest of the ensemble were finally cast in the roles they would hold for more than a decade. Instead, the crew became a family.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 Breaks Box Office Records

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 not only set a box office record for midnight showings, it absolutely shattered opening day box office records.

5 Things You Don’t Know About Harry Potter’s Tom Felton

For the past 10 years, Tom Felton has cast a spell on Harry Potter audiences as schoolyard bully Draco Malfoy. As the wizarding series comes to an end Friday with the release of the eighth and final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Us Weekly uncovers some need-to-know info about the 23-year-old Brit.

PHOTOS: Ten years of Harry Potter premieres

1. He’s happy playing the bad guy.
“I’m very grateful I am in the film at all, but even more grateful that I got the character of Draco,” Felton tells MTV News. Praising costars Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe, who play Ron Weasley and Harry Potter respectively, Felton adds that “there’s no one else in the world who…could have handled the behind-the-scenes pressure those guys have dealt with over the last decade.”

2. He’s a natural brunette.
To capture author J.K. Rowling’s description of his character, Felton dyed his hair platinum blond every 10 days. “The worst thing was dying my hair blonde,” Felton said in a 2008 press conference. “It built some super human resistance but it seems to have survived.”

3. Felton spends his downtime fishing fishing for carp.
“They are the most beautiful fish, and you don’t need to eat them,” Felton tells Scholastic. “You can just put them back and catch them again. It’s a less brutal sport as opposed to eating your catch.”
